Plaster · the new work

An old craft, learned by hand.

Megan is studying plaster at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, a college devoted to the traditional building trades. The work is slow and exact: draw the profile, model the ornament, make the mold, then cast it or run it and finish it by hand.

Where plaster meets clay

Every cast begins as a negative.

Potters have relied on plaster for centuries. Poured around a model, it sets into a mold: an exact negative that gives the same form back, again and again. That is the thread running through Megan's two crafts. The mold, and what comes out of it.
